This cake was for an Alice in Wonderland themed party for my sisters 25th b-day. ^^ I made the chess pieces from white and dark chocolate, the frosting is made from scratch, the cake itself is from a box (If Im spending all the time on the frosting, I dont have time to make the cake from scratch ^_^). An unfortunate issue was that as the evening went on, the cake started to collapse under the weight of the chess pieces.
The cookies in the background were from a bakery, so no, I didnt make the fancy, cute cookies.
For our birthdays, my sister and I have weeklong celebrations; she plans mine and I plan hers. For her 25th b-day, the theme I did was Alice in Wonderland/Chess. Each day there was a pile of twenty-five something (sprinkles, buttons, marshmallows, etc.), a special thing for the day (a gift, a game night with family, a trip to Toronto, etc.), and a card with one of the Sir John Tenniel Alice illustrations on one side and a piece of prose written by me, in the style of Lewis Carrolls Alice in Wonderland, that was a clue to the days surprise. The prose had blank spaces in it that could be solved by the pieces I arranged on the chess board every day.
After the week was over (her birthday was on a Tuesday), I surprised her the following Saturday by throwing her an Alice in Wonderland themed tea/b-day party, complete with party goers in Alice costumes.
